Fetal Echo
What is Fetal Echocardiography?
Fetal Echocardiography (Fetal Echo) is a specialized ultrasound scan that focuses on assessing the baby’s heart during pregnancy. It examines the structure, function, and rhythm of the fetal heart to detect any congenital heart abnormalities or irregularities.
Why is Fetal Echo Performed?
Fetal Echo is recommended in cases such as:
- Family history of congenital heart conditions.
- Maternal conditions like diabetes or lupus.
- Abnormal findings in routine pregnancy scans.
- Pregnancies involving IVF or other assisted reproductive techniques.
- Increased nuchal translucency or other chromosomal abnormalities detected earlier.
How is Fetal Echo Performed?
- Timing: Typically performed between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy.
- Method: A transabdominal ultrasound probe is used to closely examine the baby’s heart, including the chambers, valves, and connecting blood vessels.
- The scan takes about 30–45 minutes.
What Does Fetal Echo Assess?
- Structural defects in the heart (e.g., holes, abnormal vessels).
- Proper blood flow and rhythm of the heart.
- Functioning of valves and heart chambers.
What Happens If Abnormalities Are Detected?
If abnormalities are identified:
- Detailed counseling is provided to the parents.
- Follow-up tests like amniocentesis may be suggested.
- A management plan is developed to address the baby’s needs after birth.
Fetal Echo is crucial for diagnosing heart conditions early, ensuring that necessary care and interventions are planned for the baby.
