Cervical Scan

What is the Cervical Scan?

A cervical scan is a transvaginal ultrasound used to measure the length of the cervix. It helps assess the risk of preterm birth and ensures the health of the pregnancy.

Why is a Cervical Scan Recommended?

This scan is particularly advised for women at high risk of preterm birth, including:

  • Multiple pregnancies.
  • Previous preterm birth.
  • Abnormalities of the uterus.
  • Previous cervical surgery.

When is the Cervical Scan Performed?

  • It is commonly done at the time of the anomaly scan (20-24 weeks).
  • In women with a history of preterm birth, a series of scans may start from 16 weeks to monitor the cervix closely.

This scan provides vital information for timely interventions, if needed, to reduce the risk of preterm labor.
