Wellbeing Scan
What is the Wellbeing Scan?
The Wellbeing Scan, also known as the Growth Scan, is an ultrasound performed to assess the baby’s development and overall health during pregnancy. It includes measurements to estimate fetal weight, evaluation of fetal movement, amniotic fluid levels, and blood flow to the placenta and fetus using color Doppler.
When Can I Have the Wellbeing Scan?
The Wellbeing Scan is typically performed around 32 weeks of pregnancy. However, it can be conducted anytime between 26 weeks and full term.
Why Should I Have a Wellbeing Scan?
This scan is essential to:
- Ensure the baby is growing at a normal rate.
- Detect potential complications.
- Reassure parents about the health of their baby.
What Does the Wellbeing Scan Check For?
The scan focuses on:
Fetal Measurements:
- Head Circumference (HC).
- Abdomen Circumference (AC).
- Femur Length (FL).
These measurements help calculate the baby’s Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW), which is most accurate after 28 weeks.
Fetal Movement: Observing the baby’s movements.
Placenta and Blood Flow:
- Assessing the placental position and appearance.
- Measuring blood flow to the placenta and fetus using color Doppler ultrasound.
Amniotic Fluid: Determining the quantity of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.
